The Oral and Maxillofacial/Oral Surgery Department is concerned with the diagnosis, investigation and surgical treatment of oral, jaw , salivary and bony diseases of the oral cavity and head and neck. An outpatient facility is available for the investigation and diagnosis of these diseases including biopsy. Joint clinics are held with Oral Medicine, Orthodontics, and Restorative as well as assessment for implanted zygomatic implant retained prostheses for oncology patients. Sedation surgical facilities are available for the surgical management of those conditions possible under sedation.
Close Hospital/Consultant links are maintained with the National Maxillofacial Unit in St James’s Hospital and the Mater Misericordiae Hospital, where the academic consultants also work, as well in as the Dublin Paediatric Hospitals.
Patients are seen on the referral of a general dental/medical practitioner or on the request of a Specialist or Consultant. Where a practitioner seeks an urgent referral it is advisable to telephone, explain the situation and one of the consultants/specialists will contact you. Any urgent possible cancer case requires an urgent telephone call, with a letter/fax (01-6127296) directed to Oral Medicine/Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Research is an important part of the Department, with a number of on-going areas of research. There is an active OMFS/OS research platform.
Teaching Undergraduates and Postgraduates is an essential part of our remit with students involved in almost all aspects of our work. The Department offers a 3-year training programme in Oral Surgery (D Ch Dent) and the consultants are also involved in the 5-year Specialist Registrar training programme in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery based in the National Maxillofacial Unit in St James’s Hospital.
