Congratulations to Bisola Aloba who graduated from TCD with her Ph.D. on Friday the 1st of December 2023. Bisola’s Ph.D. project involved the application of state-of-the-art whole-genome sequencing to investigate the emergence, dissemination, and evolution of Panton-Valentine leukocidin toxin–producing methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains in the community and healthcare settings in Ireland and internationally. Bisola worked under the supervision of Professor David Coleman and Dr. Brenda McManus from the Dublin Dental University Hospital Microbiology Unit, Division of Oral Biosciences.
DDUH Doctoral Student Wins Inaugural British Fluoridation Society Career Development Fellowship.

Dr. Patrick Quinn, a third year Clinical Doctorate Student in Dental Public Health at the School of Dental Science, Trinity College Dublin & Dublin Dental University Hospital, has been awarded the inaugural British Fluoridation Society Career Development Fellowship. The Fellowship, which is funded by The Borrow Foundation, aims to aid the career development of dental professionals with an interest in community water fluoridation and grow expertise in this area. Dr. Quinn's successful application built on work undertaken on the doctoral programme to date and will involve spending time at institutions abroad with international experts in the field as well as undertaking patient and public involvement (PPI) research relating to the availability of fluoride monitoring data to key stakeholders such as the public, dental professionals and researchers. The Fellowship is for a period of two years and will culminate in a final report and a publication in a recognised academic journal. Oral Microbiome group win best poster presentation at OPMD day in Antwerp.

The Oral Potentially Malignant Disorder (OPMD) day conference was held in Antwerp (August 30th-31st) and was attended by clinicians, pathologists and basic scientists from across Europe. The DDUH Oral Microbiome research group won the prize for best poster presentation with their study “Fusobacterium nucleatum recovered from OPMD induce cell migration and angiogenesis in vitro”. The study was carried out jointly by PhD students Ajith Selvaraj and Claire Crowley. Ajith’s PhD was supported by TCD through a Provost’s Scholarship award and Claire’s PhD is current supported by a grant from the Health Research Board.

Postdoc James O’Connor Moneley received a special commendation for his research presentation at the Annual Meeting of the Irish Fungal Society held on the 22nd of June in DCU. The title of his presentation was “The Candida albicans Telomere-associated ORF (TLO) gene family is implicated in tolerance to fluconazole”.
