Congratulations to Bisola Aloba who graduated from TCD with her Ph.D. on Friday the 1st of December 2023. Bisola’s Ph.D. project involved the application of state-of-the-art whole-genome sequencing to investigate the emergence, dissemination, and evolution of Panton-Valentine leukocidin toxin–producing methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains in the community and healthcare settings in Ireland and internationally. Bisola worked under the supervision of Professor David Coleman and Dr. Brenda McManus from the Dublin Dental University Hospital Microbiology Unit, Division of Oral Biosciences.

Bisola’s Ph.D. research has been published in two papers in the international Journal of Hospital Infection:

McManus BA, Aloba BK, Earls MR, Brennan GI, O'Connell B, Monecke S, Ehricht R, Shore AC, Coleman DC. Multiple distinct outbreaks of Panton-Valentine leucocidin-positive community-associated meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in Ireland investigated by whole-genome sequencing. Journal of Hospital Infection 2021, 108:72-80. doi: 10.1016/j.jhin.2020.11.021.
